My Bestie, MaDukes, and I embarked on a Girls Day Out as we went and saw the Movie:
The Birth of a Nation
As we set out to grab some Popcorn, snacks, and got seated… we experienced an emotional roller coaster as this film will have you laughing and crying!
The Birth of a Nation is a film about Nat Turner. If you are not familiar with Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 – November 11, 1831) he was born into slavery, as a child, he is taught to read so he can study the Bible, and be a preacher to fellow slaves. When Turner’s master takes him across the country on a preaching tour to profit from his preaching, Turner begins to see the scope of slavery, and decides to become a different kind of leader. At this point, Nate an enslaved African American led a rebellion of slaves and free blacks in 1831, that resulted in the deaths of 55 to 65 white people. In retaliation, white militias and mobs killed more than 200 black people while putting down the rebellion.
Which led to The Birth of a Nation…
Aunjanue Ellis as Nancy Turner
Aja Naomi King as Cherry
Gabrielle Union in supporting roles
Most Memorable Line: “God is a God of Love” and Nat responds, “God is also, a God of Wrath”
~ This was definitely the turning point in the movie and when you could literally fell the atmosphere shift in throughout the Movie Theater as you feel the vibes across the room
My Thoughts: I know many may not be interested in seeing the film as there has been some increased scrutiny that arise due to an alleged rape in 1999 by Nat Parker. Where Parker and his roommate were both acquitted, however, the controversy put a damper on the film which has caused the box office numbers to be lower than expected and cause some people not to support. Then you have those who are just not interested in seeing “another slave movie”… But I will say that this is not just another slave movie it is history and it tells Nat Turner story and Nat Parker as Parker is only the messenger. As we all have a story to tell and if we don’t tell it… Someone else will!
There are still a lot of untold stories, hidden truths, covered up lies and we will NEVER be able to heal if these things are NOT revealed!
The more we know; the more we grow!
With that being said, YES! The movie is a must-see as I highly recommend it!
